2009 Earth Day and Street Fair Events
This spring the North Jersey Section will be participating in Earth Day events and Street Fairs. This is a way to tell the general public about chemists and chemistry and it is a way to publicize all the events of the section. In order for us to do this we need you to volunteer to work at the booth that we will set up at each event. We will also be participating in fall events which will lead up to Chemistry Week. In order to make this work we need lots of volunteers. The volunteers do not have to spend a lot of time at the booth one to two hours will do. Since most of the events are on the weekends, Saturday or Sunday this would be a good time to bring you kids to volunteer with you. The Student Affiliate Chapters will also be at the booth and maybe other student groups.

In the Spotlight: Chemists Celebrate Earth Day
For
Chemists Celebrate Earth Day (CCED) 2009, student affiliates
and local sections are encouraged to inform the public about ways
to lower their carbon footprint and have them pledge to become more
conscious of their daily carbon dioxide emissions. A
PowerPoint presentation
about the topic is available for use at public and
school events. Leaders are invited to place a short summary of their
2009 CCED outreach activities onto the ACS Network and Facebook
sections devoted to CCED. This year, the popular Illustrated Haiku
Contest for K–12 students will be repeated. Local sections
have submitted entries from various grade ranges and the national
winners will be chosen by April 22nd.
The fun-filled newspaper
Celebrating Chemistry
will again be provided
to local sections. It includes activities to do with young people,
information about wind energy, and an interview with a scientist
by Meg A. Mole. And to provide something to remember the day, several
Earth Day products can be purchased and given to students and members
of the public who come to local celebrations. You can order Earth
Day stress balls, temporary tatoos, and enviro-moles by the dozens!

You Matter on Earth Day
On April 22, 1970, 20 million people across America celebrated the
first Earth Day. It was a time when cities were buried under their
own smog and polluted rivers caught fire. Now Earth Day is celebrated
annually around the globe. Through the combined efforts of the U.S.
government, grassroots organizations, and citizens like you, what
started as a day of national environmental recognition has evolved
into a worldwide campaign to protect our global environment.
